  • Why does ICommander Corporation appear to favor the Linux Platform?
Speed, stability, flexibility, security, and low cost. Most users who run ICommander on Linux for the first time are amazed at the speed. Reports containing thousands of pages are created in seconds.

  • Why is the ICommander Annual Support Access Fee so much less than most other high-end accounting software systems?
ICommander does not require a high degree of support once it is implemented. Any ICommander support time is billed at hourly rates for the actual time required. If a customer has no need for support during the year, they pay nothing beyond the Annual Support Access Fee.

  • Can the ICommander General Ledger Chart of Accounts be expanded as my business grows?
Yes. The structure of the ICommander G/L Chart of Accounts is uniquely flexible. Even if you start out with just a simple 4-digit account number, ICommander stores the chart in such a way that you can elect to activate previously un-used components without losing access to existing data in your history files. There are up to five components that may be activated plus optional background grouping codes that allow virtually un-limited breakdowns and summarizations. All existing G/L Financial Statement reports automatically incorporate changes to the chart of accounts.

ICommander also gives you the ability to actually redesign your chart of accounts with its unique chart rearrange function. You specify the current account number and the new number and ICommander does the rest. Not only does ICommander convert the current records, it also converts history records to reflect the changes to the chart.

  • How do I give selected users access to only part of a system?
There are several options for this. One is the use of program security levels that give users access to programs/menu choices based on their level of security. Another very effective option is to create one or more "dummy" systems that only include the menu choices you wish to make available. This is done in a matter of minutes using functions available in the ICommander System Control application.

You may also create a user-specific or department-specific (like SALES-DEPT) system selection menu which allows users to view only those systems available to them. Access to "hidden" ICommander system selection menus may also be used to vary what is available to particular users.

  • How can I justify a switch to Linux when my existing network uses Windows exclusively?
You don't really "switch" to Linux. You simply install a Linux Server and add it to the existing TCP/IP network. The Linux System may use any Windows printer on the network and the Windows Systems may use any printer attached to the Linux System. Personal User directories and/or shared directories on Linux are easily made available to the Windows network for file sharing.

All the software needed for this interoperability is standard on Redhat Linux. Your investment consists of a single PC running Linux. The cost of the Linux Server will be about the same as adding another Windows PC to your network. The only additional cost is adding an inexpensive but very capable terminal emulator (Anziowin) to each PC that accesses the ICommander Systems.

  • How difficult is it to print to a remote printer when processing over the Internet?
From the perspective of the user, printing to a remote printer is no different from printing to a printer directly attached to the Linux Internet Server. The Anzio Print Wizard installed on the remote PC モlistensヤ for print jobs sent from the Linux Server and directs any received to the appropriate printer automatically. The ICommander user simply sets the remote printer as his or her default printer (or chooses it via the ICommander Printer Control Utility) and presses P to Print.

  • Can I explore printouts on the screen?
Yes. ICommander uses a text editor called Vim to access any report in the current report files or the report archives. Vim provides non-case-sensitive search facilities and is extremely fast with exploration of reports of several hundred pages being almost instantaneous. Vim [also known as Vi] is the standard text editor on Linux. Because of its speed and capability, we also install it on systems running the Windows version of ICommander.

ICommander also provides an option to convert any report into a PDF File (available on the Linux platform only). This allows users to provide ICommander reports to managers and others who do not have access to ICommander and Vim so they can use the readily available Adobe Acrobat Reader for on-screen exploration or selective printing of pages.

  • Are the Linux, Unix, and Windows versions of ICommander similar?
Not just similarラidentical. All programs function the same way on each system. You can copy a program from one supported system to another. However, while the Accounting Systems are the same on each platform, the Linux/Unix platforms enable us to provide you with some モneatヤ utility functions that are not available on the Windows platform.

  • Are the Business, Governmental, School District, and Non-Profit versions of ICommander for the General Accounting Systems (General Ledger, Payroll, Accounts Payable, and Accounts Receivable) similar?
Not just similarラidentical. While there are some systems specific to business or governments, the General Systems are the same. Each system is adapted to your particular organization type by setting applicable options in the systemメs master control files. These options are selected specifically for your organization by ICommander staff familiar with your organizationメs needs and in consultation with you.

  • Is ICommander suitable for a large organization?
It depends on what you define as large. Presently, our largest customers have up to 2,000 employees and many separate locations. Some of our larger customers have over 25,000 accounts in their General Ledger Chart of Accounts due to the need for tracking multiple locations and individual revenue-producing equipment items. Among our largest customers are oil and gas producing companies that must track the revenues and expenses associated with several different properties.

The design and functioning of ICommander does not include any restrictions on the size of an organization. However, ICommander at present is not suitable for large multi-national companies.

  • Is ICommander suitable for a small organization?
Yes. It brings small organizations the power of high-end accounting software at a reasonable cost. The Internet Processing option with its low monthly fees yet full capabilities is especially well suited for smaller organizations. Features in each application that you may not need at your present size start out inactive and are activated as your organization grows.

  • It sounds like ICommander has been around a long time--why haven't we heard about it before?
Development of ICommander first started in 1986 as Ken Olsonメs vision to simplify the creation and management of the ICOBOL accounting applications that he had already developed; also, to provide a means of building complete accounting systems that could be supported across many different industries and computer operating systems. Initial users were clients of Page, Olson & Company, P.C., Certified Public Accountants, which had turned to Ken to develop accounting systems to meet their needs.

Each ICommander Accounting Application System took two or more years of personal effort to build and implement with the CPA firm's clients acting as both guinea pigs and beneficiaries of the results. It was always the intent to develop ICommander to be available on a broad scale モsomedayヤ. It was not until 1996 that Ken realized that モsomedayヤ was now. This realization was due to the implementation of ICommander at a large oil and gas well-servicing company with multiple locations that was not a client of the CPA firm. This implementation led to the development of additional systems including software to handle the export (or downloading)/import (or uploading) of transactions from remote sites.

The development concentration for several years has been to design and build extremely flexible accounting application systems. ICommander, as it exists now, incorporates the benefits of both the most recent ICOBOL programming language functionality and the dramatic increases in computing power that have occurred over the last several years. These benefits contribute to ICommanderメs longstanding underlying structure and flexibility plus a myriad of new features that benefit users and make it feasible to support ICommander on a broad scale.

The long-time it has taken to start to let the world know about ICommander reflects the extent of effort involved in its development. It also reflects the philosophy that widespread implementation would not be attempted until its developer was satisfied that a large user base could be supported in the same professional manner as the original small group of ICommander users.

  • Can I setup my own ICommander Server for use over the Internet?
Yes. This is a very good option for an organization with multiple sites. We offer this capability only on the Linux platform due to its ability to provide the security needed and the flexibility for remote printing. Processing over the Internet is inherently insecure and we do not recommend it without the use of the ICommander Authentication features we provide on the Linux platform.

  • Does ICommander include a Report-Writer?
No. ICommander does not force its users to be programmers. Each application has hundreds of reports available with select and support options specific to the data being reported. The General Ledger financial reporting functions use a unique design that provides all of the benefits of a sophisticated report writer without the need for users to maintain a separate database to control which accounts go where on each report. This includes the ability to save report parameters for automatic re-use. Report parameters adapt automatically to changes in the chart of accounts.

Additionally each application has options for users to create tab-delimited files by free-form selection from all fields available within a particular data file. These options are simple menu choices that allow users to select fields, specify selection criteria, select sort fields, and set column order resulting in a tab-delimited file which is ready for import into spreadsheet software such as Excel, Corel, or Lotus. The files created automatically include relevant totals and are arranged in such a manner that the entire spreadsheet can have all columns automatically formatted with about six mouse clicks. Specifications may be stored with user-defined names for automatic re-use later. An option to exclude documentation and sort header lines is available to enable the output file to be imported into database applications such as Access.

  • How do I get a Current ICommander Manual?
The ICommander Manuals are stored on-line with system-specific documentation organized by menu choices. The manual pages relating to any menu choice may be viewed on-line by entering the "secret" menu choice number for this purpose. The applicable manual pages accessed may be sent to your favorite printer. There is also a モhot-keyヤ option that allows you to access manual pages within an entry screen. A user may print the entire manual for any system at any time via a menu option. The printed manual is organized by the ICommander menu structure so it is very easy to associate with the menus.

You may also add your own personal manual sections to the ICommander Manuals to tailor the documentation to your specific use. Such additions are made available for user access just like the standard documentation. Subsequent ICommander updates will not disturb your personal additions. Shortcuts to specific documentation may be added. You can add personal shortcuts to menu choices that contain notes to yourself or other users on the use of the menu options.

  • Why does ICommander call itself the "Permanent Accounting Solution"?
ICommander seeks to defy the conventional wisdom that any accounting software needs to be replaced every three to five years. We have customers that have used ICommander for more than fifteen years, from the days of the mini-computer to todayメs high powered PCメs, without replacing their accounting systems. Our objective is to keep our track record unbroken. The extreme compatibility provided by the ICOBOL language, which has adapted to changing technology since the late 1970's, combined with the structure of ICommander enables consistent functioning on any operating system platform supported. The tremendous flexibility of ICommander allows it to expand and grow along with your organization.

  • Can I store reports on my computer or network instead of printing them?
Yes. ICommander includes options for archiving reports. All reports may be optionally "spooled" to files on the disk for printing via the Printer Control Utility provided with ICommander. Any spooled report may be selected for archiving once you have viewed or printed relevant pages. The archived reports may be retrieved at any time for printing or viewing.

Selected reports may be flagged for automatic archiving. This is especially useful for very long "audit trail" reports that you need to have available at some future date but for which you do not need a current printout.

  • What is the best platform for running ICommander?
If there will only be one user, a reasonably current PC running Microsoft Window 9X/ME/XP/2000/NT is the obvious answer. Multiple users sharing programs and files on a central computer works best on a true multi-user operating system. The Windows-XP/2000/NT systems are of this nature. Redhat Linux and the various Unix operating systems supported are also true multi-user systems.

If there will be several active users, addition of a Redhat Linux server dedicated to running ICommander will often be recommended. This is a very cost effective solution and enables ICommander features not available on Windows systems. It is also the most efficient to install and maintain so ongoing costs are also less. Complete interoperabilty with Windows computers is built in so file and printer sharing are easily accomplished in either direction.

  • Can you automatically convert ICommander reports to PDF files when operating on the Windows platform?
No. This function uses software tools available only on Linux systems. Free tools such as this are another reason ICommander favors the use of Linux.

Not only can you use Linuxメs conversion tools to convert ICommander reports to PDF files, your ICommander representative can configure your system so that any document located on your computer can be converted to PDF by printing to a special shared Linux printer from any Windows application. If you have a Linux system, ask your ICommander representative about this option. Youメre only charged for the time it takes to configure your system

  • Can ICommander be customized for my needs?
Yes. ICommander is structured in such a way that customized software can be supported just as the general application systems are. This includes invisible substitution of customer-specific programs for specific menu choices, creation of substitute menus for customer or industry-specific needs, and creation of complete systems that function as extensions of the general systems software. ICommander software update routines are designed to assure that updates to the general systems will not interfere with or unexpectedly replace any custom programs in place.

Custom programs are created upon request. Estimates of time and fees will be provided before work is begun. ICommander Corporation reserves the right to incorporate all or parts of customized systems into software available to other customers.

  • Can I install and implement ICommander myself?
Yes, but we don't recommend it. The installation on a single-user system is fairly simple but implementation in a manner that maximizes the benefit to your organization is difficult without assistance from the staff of ICommander Corporation. ICommander is accounting software developed by accountants and is capable of being applied to any number of diverse industries and customers. A consequence of its adaptability is that the choices that need to be made when it is implemented are extensive and can be overwhelming without input from accountants familiar with its operation.

ICommander Corporation strives to insulate users from the inherent underlying complexities of ICommander. Properly implemented, those complexities enable it to function very simply for each customer. The philosophy of ICommander relating to not forcing users to become programmers likewise applies to not forcing users to become system integrators. Customers that have staff members in place who can handle much of the implementation process can use the ICommander Corporation staff as a resource while others can have the ICommander staff coordinate all phases of implementation.

  • Does ICommander have a Job Cost Application System?
Complete Job Costing functions are incorporated into the ICommander Accounts Payable System and are available by selecting job costing in the control file for the A/P System. Other applications such as Payroll and Accounts Receivable have control file options for using the Job Cost Functions if they are activated in A/P.

  • How can I get a Demonstration of ICommander?
A demonstration can be presented at your offices or at ICommander Corporation upon request. There is also an option for a hands-on demonstration via your internet browser which will enable you to explore the systems on your own or with shared viewing of the screens with an ICommander representative.

Please contact us for either option. ICommander is designed to adapt to the needs of particular industry types and customers. As a result there is no single set of ICommander Demo Files that fit all needs. Once we understand the nature of your operation, the face to face or internet demo will be setup to access files relating to how your organization might use ICommander.

  • Is ICommander a Graphical Application?
Yes on Linux using a Windows PC as your Workstation and the Anziowin Terminal Emulation software and special Linux terminal definitions developed by ICommander Corporation.

What you will find different and better than your typical Windows entry screens where you are often forced to use your mouse is that we have preserved all the advantages of character-based legacy entry screens at the same time. This greatly increases the speed of entry, especially for high-volume transactions.

You may use the mouse where it is beneficial for selecting a menu choice, entry field, etc. and for Copy and Paste when needed. You may also use a Toolbar that duplicates many ICommander functions which may be more rapidly accessed via shortcut keys that we encourage users to learn and use. Printing to laser printers is also fully graphical now but we have preserved the ability to print to actual line printers or to lasers using line-printer formatting.

ICommander is also now fully integrated with an Intranet on Linux Servers. This includes automatic publishing of accounting information in many forms as web pages. ICommander is used to manage and maintain the Intranet content and enables providing a browser interface to information shared between ICommander and the Intranet.

    Graphical yes--typical no.
