The Secure Remote use of an ICommander Redhat Server via a Tunnel through the
Internet includes ICommander validation that the physical address of the Network
Card (MAC Address) matches one that has been registered in ICommander System
Control. That same concept is used to track PC's on a Local Area Network. We
have managed to extend it to connections from anywhere.
There are many validations that occur before this is done in order to assure that the address is being submitted by a PC setup with all required ICommander remote access configuration details. We believe it is a very effective final proof that ONLY the specific individual PC's that you have authorized for remote access can get to your accounting data.
If a PC uses a modem to connect to the Internet and does not have a Network Card when you wish to authorize it for remote access, you MUST first install a Network Card. This is not expensive but is necessary to have a physical address that may be validated against those allowed to connect.
There ARE people around the world who apparently have nothing better to do than
to try to access servers to do damage or just explore. You DO NOT want them to
be successful in accessing YOUR server.
