Why ICommander?
ICommander has many methods for varying what menu choices are available to particular users. The most flexible and robust option was added to ICommander in late 2005. Complete replacement menus may now be constructed in order to tailor the menu choices to a particular Industry, Work-Group, User, and/or Company-ID.

This may be used to simplify the menu choices by including only those items your site uses. It also enables changing descriptions and titles to be better understood by your staff.

The Work-Group Option may be used to construct limited menus for several users in the same classification. An example would be a CLERK work group for which only transaction entry and inquiry programs are put on the menus used by this Work Group. By simply assigning a user to this Work Group, he or she will automatically have only the menu choices you decide to make available.

We have used the User-Specific Option for a customer who wanted someone who does not normally work with ICommander to be able to easily access ICommander File Manager to explore a specific shared directory. When that user signs onto ICommander, the System Selection Menu is bypassed and he goes directly to his File-Manager Menu that gives him access to the applicable shared directory. Since no accounting systems are involved, we set this up as a Help System instead of an Application System. This also enables letting this user bypass the normal ICommander Logon (by setting the ICommander Username to be the same as the Linux Username and other flags to permit it). Access to the particular function is very quick as once the user has entered his Linux username and password he immediately goes to the Menu with the function he needs. On exit from that Menu he is logged completely out of both ICommander and Linux.

The access to ICommander File Manager described above is used in this case to securely transfer non-ICommander files from a shared directory on the LAN to a remote PC over the Internet. This enables downloading and uploading spreadsheets and other files safely via the tunnel through the Internet that is used to access the ICommander Server.
